New class for Wittedrift Primary
School

All smiles as learners
at the Wittedrift Primary School show off their new classroom
The preschool learners of
Wittedrift have something to smile about. Thanks to the
generosity of a donour, a new class was built especially for
them.
Carlos
de Abrue of Belgium has opened his heart to the children of the
Wittedrift Primary School. He donated a sum of money to Born in
Africa, situated in Plettenberg Bay, which in turn made it
possible for the school to build the new class. Born in Africa
was started about five years ago by a number of people based in
the Bitou area and some in Belgium. It aims to support the
educational development of children from previously
disadvantaged communities.
Isabelle de Smul Brink,
who is from Belgium, and who heads Born in Africa, said that
their aim was to uplift education in Bitou in three ways. These
included infrastructure support to schools in terms of
resources, equipment and books and guidance to parents in order
to facilitate the education of their children. The third vital
component is the 'Adopt a Child' programme whereby individuals
each contribute financially annually to the education of an
individual child.
De Abreu, who
was on holiday in the area said he created a foundation in
loving memory of his wife Lilianne who died last year. The
classroom was named after her.
Mr Peter Chalmers,
principal of Wittedrift Primary said, “the class will be used
for preschool instruction. Many children who enrol at school are
often unfamiliar with books and learning materials and this new
class will be a wonderful environment to get these learners
ready for 'big school'.
