Greenhill educare centre revived
Francois
du Plessis
The Greenhill Educare Centre had been in operation for
five years when it had to close in early 2006. This caused an
enormous vacuum in childcare in Phase 3 Kwanokuthula. At the end
of 2006 the crèche had been placed under the auspices of the
Chapelry Council of St Peters Church, Plettenberg Bay. The
facilities have been renovated and painted by the Plettenberg
Bay Municipality.
Luckily the crèche reopened at the beginning of 2007 to
cater for 60 pre-school children, from the ages of 3 – 5
years. The Carss family, who set up the Trust in memory of their
daughter Zoë, who was tragically killed in Nepal where she was
teaching, envisages that the Greenhill crèche would be the
model A crèche in the under-privileged areas of Plettenberg Bay
within a few years.
The teachers are taking the ECD (Early Childhood
Development) training courses at Operation Upgrade which is also
funded by the Zoë Carss Trust. The training is based on the
Montessori teaching methods. There is also a Grade R class to
make sure the children are well prepared for primary school.
