The hunt is on at the Upper Deck Gallery

The Upper Deck Gallery, Plettenberg Bay known for its vision to make art more accessible to the public, welcomes one of South Africa's foremost sculptors Maureen Quin and her breathtaking presentation of sculptures in bronze. The Hunt exhibition launches on 29 February and will run until mid April.

Sculpture in motion - one of Maureen Quin’s creations.

Comments Quin, “The Hunt is a series of bronze sculptures created over a period of eight years. I don't want to prescribe to the viewer what to see or experience but I have tried to express the horror I feel for man's inhumanity to his fellow men, compounded with the wanton destruction of our environment in the name of development, greed, power and self gratification.”

Says Upper Deck Gallery owner and curator, Noelle Bolton, “It is incredibly rewarding and indeed humbling that in just one year of the Upper Deck Gallery opening we have been able to create a true art platform in Plett and to entice great artists such as Maureen.”

Quin's keen observational powers and deep emotional response to her environment, enables her to capture the essence of her subject, be it wildlife or realistic studies, which in turn form the core of her distinctive expressionistic style, manifesting the rich fusion of her European - African background.

ABOUT MAUREEN : Maureen was born in 1934 in the Bloemfontein district and achieved a Diploma in Fine Arts with distinction, majoring in sculpture, from Durban Art School. As the winner of an Emma Smith Bursary she then furthered her studies at Goldsmith College, London. She has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions and is well known for her bronze commissions such as the bust of Nelson Mandela for Rhodes University, the Read Memorial at St John's College and various life size renditions of both humans and animals.

Upper Deck Gallery invites all lovers of art to the opening of this formidable exhibition on Friday 29 February at 18:00.
