The
Lord Jesus Christ in the book of 1 Samuel
Samuel, Saul and David
stand out as the three central figures of I and II Samuel.
As 1 Samuel
begins Israel was at a low point spiritually. The priesthood was
corrupt (I Sam 2:12-17; 22-26), the Ark of the Covenant was not
at the tabernacle (I Sam 4:3-7:2), idolatry was practiced (I Sam
7:3&4) and the Judges were dishonest (I Sam
8:2&3).
Through the influence of
godly Samuel (I Sam 12:23) and David (I Sam 13:14) these
conditions were reversed. Second Samuel concludes with the anger
of God being withdrawn from Israel (II Sam 24:25)
1. THE NAME OF
SAMUEL:
Samuel himself
was a picture or type of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. In the
Assyrian, closely allied to the Hebrew tongue, the word
“Sumu” means “Son” (offspring) or “son of God”.
Hannah, in the depth and sincerity of her surrender, gave up her
first-born son to the Lord utterly. Samuel was “God's son”
from the very moment of his birth. ”Therefore I have given him
to the Lord!”
Am I willing to surrender
my child to God for His work and the Salvation of precious
souls?
2. THE SONG AND
PRAYER OF HANNAH:
The resemblance
between Hannah's Song and Mary's (the mother of Jesus) Song has
always been marked. Mary's Song is not a repetition of Hannah's,
yet both see the same vision. It is a clear vision of the
earth's full Salvation and of the Lord's Christ.” The
adversaries of the Lord shall be broken in pieces; …The Lord
will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to His
King, and exalt the horn of His Anointed” – that is of His
Messiah (1 Sam 2:10) “He has shown strength with His arm; He
has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He
has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the
lowly...” (Luke 1:51-55)
Hannah's Song and the
name she gave her child are alike a prophecy of the Lord Jesus
Christ. She has the honor of being the first to use the name
“MESSIAH”.
Do I personally
know this Name – The ONLY MESSIAH ?
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
