They
came…they ate…then roared away on their Harley’s again!!
Tourism remains
one of the core economic sectors in our town. Not only is our
town and region attracting many overseas visitors, but we also
seem to be attracting royalty. Last week saw the unexpected
arrival of Jordanian monarch, King Abdullah II. It was all
hush-hush as he went to extremes to keep his whirlwind visit to
the Garden Route a secret. He is known for his sense of
adventure. This time he and an entourage of Harley Davidson
bikers, 20 bodyguards in black luxury vehicles and an ambulance
descended on the Plettenberg Bay's Dolphin Restaurant. They
enjoyed lunch, and then, in a flash, they were gone…
Thanks to the
joint efforts of the Eden District Municipality and tourism
offices in George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, the broad-based
marketing plan to promote the entire Garden Route and Klein
Karoo as a single holiday destination is bearing much fruit.
At these
exhibitions we're competing against some of the world's top
holiday destinations. So far, we've had a very positive response
because our region offers a wide variety of attractions as a
major draw card. The tourism bodies have a common goal and that
is to increase the number of visitors to our town.
The marketing
initiatives also play a very important role in the local
economic development of our town. Skills development, training,
and the transference of skills are important cornerstones of
Plettenberg Bay's marketing plan for tourism, which further
impacts on the growth of tourism.
